11:12 am - wakeup call
I received a 3am wakeup call from my Muse this morning, screaming "Write this down NOW!". tryphina13 wants to know if my Muse looks anything like George Clooney, but I can't say, because it was very dark at 3am.

But the song is almost finished, and I'm really liking it, and that makes me happy.

9:59 am - update on qnvhrtz
qnvhrtz is out of surgery and in recovery; everything went well. She should be home by Sunday. I'll post more information as I get it.

For those of you at Windycon this weekend, I'll have a card for her at my dealer's table if you'd like to sign it.

purloined from vixyish in a daring midnight escapade:

You see me getting put into the back of a police car.

What do you assume I've been arrested for?

11:25 am - My Response to Prop 8
The American Civil Liberties Union, along with Lambda Legal and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, has filed a writ petition before the California Supreme Court urging the court to invalidate Proposition 8.

From the ACLU website:

"The petition charges that Proposition 8 is invalid because the initiative process was improperly used in an attempt to undo the constitution's core commitment to equality for everyone by eliminating a fundamental right from just one group – lesbian and gay Californians. Proposition 8 also improperly attempts to prevent the courts from exercising their essential constitutional role of protecting the equal protection rights of minorities. According to the California Constitution, such radical changes to the organizing principles of state government cannot be made by simple majority vote through the initiative process, but instead must, at a minimum, go through the state legislature first."

No, I didn't post that meme that went around. Instead, as of today, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU. At least, I will be, once my card arrives...

My sincere hope for you and yours, my friend, is this: may you never experience the despair and heartbreak that so many of us have lived with for much of the past eight years.

4:12 pm - Do It Yourself Negative Ad
Here's how: go to your profile, pick out some of your listed interests, and make yourself look bad. Here's mine -- try to imagine it being read in menacing tones over a really unflattering photo of yours truly...

What do we really know about singlemaltsilk?

Sure, singlemaltsilk says she cares about ‘democracy’, ‘honesty’ and ‘honor’. But what about her openly-admitted chocolate addiction? What about her ongoing relationship with a fringe paramilitary group? And how can singlemaltsilk possibly justify her steadfast refusal to buy American-made vintage Japanese kimono??

singlemaltsilk: good for a few laughs. But good for America???

7:45 pm - More Good News (and a shameless plug)
Barring relapse, I am cleared to attend OVFF!

I will also be bringing not only Second-Hand Silk, but...

...drum roll...

The Second-Hand Silk CLEARANCE SALE!!!

(cue oohs and ahhs)

Yes, I still need to move out some of the older stock, so that I can acquire new (to us, anyway) pieces and pay a few bills, so there will be fabulous bargains galore to be had!

Hope to see you there!

12:01 pm - Happy News
For those of you who missed hearing about this at ConClave: my dear friend, the lovely Ann "Francoise" Nordmeyer, has accepted a proposal of marriage from my dear friend and kinsman Michael "Moonwulf" Longcor.

I hope you will all join me in wishing Ann and Wulf every possible happiness.

3:36 pm - it can't be wrong, if it feels so right
It's 84 degrees outside, but the humidity is 42 percent, so it feels like 74 here. I'm spending my Saturday at my dining room table -- which is dripping with ribbons and beads in scarlet and silver, emerald and gold -- making Christmas ornaments. The Cubs are on the radio, looking for one more win with which to clinch their division. Yes, I am but a simple soul, with simple needs.

And how is your day going?

8:59 pm - My ConClave Schedule
We had to do a bit of juggling, but here we go!

Friday, 7pm (Apollo): Yours Truly in Concert, featuring extra-special guest guitarist Michael "Moonwulf" Longcor.

Friday, 9pm (Apollo): The Bill and "Barry" Show, in which I shall bravely attempt to play stunt-double for Barry Gehm to beamjockey's Bill.

Sunday, Noon (Columbia): Obi 101 -- Ladies, come and learn to tie your obi, plus tips on finding/making the right obi for you. Feel free to bring an obi if you have one, or use the fabric provided at the demo.

Sunday 1pm (Apollo): Tweaking Your Performance. If you've been to OVFF, think 'juried one-shot'; if you came to UFAN at Capricon, think 'Performance Master Class'. Prepare at least a verse/chorus of a song you'd like to polish, and our panel of Wise and Kindly Old Judges will offer their best advice.

I am not a single-issue voter.

Therefore, your cynical, calculated, condescending choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as your running mate cannot and will not buy this gal's vote.

12:09 pm - Waiting for Godot
Or, in this case, the air-conditioning repair guy, who was supposed to be here between 9 and noon. Dispatch insists he's on his way and will be here in 10-20 minutes. We'll see.

EDIT 1:08pm : AC guy is here, wish me luck!

EDIT AGAIN: Simple fix, and I have AC, Yay!

11:38 pm - Best. Bar Food. Ever.
I'm at Confluence in Pittsburgh, and the hotel bar's idea of 'bar food' is:

Parmesan-dusted, truffled french fries, served with garlic aioli.

Awe. Some.

Plus? When you check in, they hand you a warm chocolate chip cookie along with your room key.

10:16 am - Monday, Monday
Tomorrow I have jury duty in downtown Chicago. If I have enough time for lunch (or if they release us early) I may dash over to the Taste of Chicago. I've been looking over the interactive map and have identified the booths I'm interested in visiting.

I don't generally go to ToC for basic 'fair food', or dishes I can easily find (or make) on my own, so I'll usually skip the ribs, pizza, turkey legs, corn on the cob and the like. Years ago, I had my first taste of frog legs and turtle soup at ToC.

So here are the menu items that caught my eye; the number with each is the booth number. I won't eat all of these, of course; I'll just try whichever ones I come across in my foray...

#20 Vee-Vee's African Cuisine: sauteed goat w/fried plantain

#10 Vermilion Latin-American Cuisine: mango cumin-dusted fries w/chutney

#30 Tutto Italiano: coconut-lime sorbet

#63 Tamarind: Taiwan shining noodles (vegetarian)

#2 Soul Vegetarian East: vegetarian BBQ twist

#57 Sabor Latina: Alcapurria (pork-filled banana dumpling)

#16 Hashbrowns: sweet potato hashbrowns

#1 Bolat African Cuisine: coconut rice w/sauteed goat

#65: Bobtail Ice Cream Company: Merlot chocolate chip ice cream

5:03 pm - Ten Shiny Things
vixyish wrote recently of ten things in her possession that make her smile. Not "the love of good friends" stuff (though we all know how important those intangibles are), but actual physical bits of matter one can hold. Here are mine, in no particular order (no way could I rank them):Read more...Collapse )

6:09 pm - mulberry tree update
It's going to be a while before I can get the little volunteer mulberry out -- it's growing out between the foundation and the concrete pad where the old air conditioner used to be. In the meantime, I thought I might as well pick the ripe berries.

I picked about a cup this morning, and brought them to the office for one of my co-workers (my digestive system won't tolerate the seeds). She says these are incredibly sweet, and is planning to pick up some vanilla ice cream on the way home and have the rest for dessert :)
